Sketchnotes in service design

Session type:
Hands-On

Session duration:
90 minutes

Presented by:

Dr Makayla Lewis

Brunel University London

About this Hands-On

Sketchnotes are fast, lightweight, easy to create, purposeful notes. They can be a valuable tool to increase communication and break down boundaries to concept expression. They support the thinking and research process and collaboration with colleagues, service providers and customers.

This hands-on will give participants a space to explore and develop sketchnote skills whilst obtaining constructive feedback from an experienced tutor. It will be divided into 4 parts: background, examples and mark-making; sketchnote 101; applied sketchnotes; and Q&A.

About the Speaker

Makayla obtained a PhD in human-computer interaction (HCI) from City University London in 2012. She was formerly a research assistant on the Cyber Security Cartographies Project at Royal Holloway, University of London, and research associate on Cyber Security Body of Knowledge at InfoLab 21, University of Lancaster. She is now a research fellow on the Smart Money project at Brunel University London.

Makayla uses HCI, UX and visual methods to draw out an understanding of how people influence the management of their data and how they use social networks to extend and maintain this influence. Makayla is an accomplished visual thinker, sketcher and visual note taker; her sketchnotes have been featured in 3 books, and most recently in the Adobe Blog. Examples of Makayla's work can be seen on her website.
