About this Case Study

During this session, we will talk about how we assess services against the Government Service Standard, and what GDS and the wider cross-government assessment community are doing to ensure that assessments continue to deliver value. Hear from lead assessors and GDS digital engagement managers about why we believe that assessments help teams to deliver the best services for citizens.

About the Speakers

Steve McCready

Steve is a senior technology advisor at GDS. Senior technology advisors (or STAs) assure requests to spend government money on digital and technology services and solutions, providing a challenge and approval function for government.

Steve is a relatively new civil servant and lead assessor, having previously spent 12 years working in various senior technology roles at IBM.

Sam Villis

Sam is also a senior technology advisor at GDS and a very experienced lead assessor.

Sam previously worked in the Cabinet Office in a role that focused on engagement, assurance and strategy. She advised Cabinet Office teams on how to build and run digital services, as well as coaching in aspects of product management and agile, aligned with GDS Service Design principles.

Steven Skamarski

Steven is a digital engagement manager at GDS. Digital engagement managers (or DEMs) are the key organisers, convenors and shepherds of the assessment process. They make sure that teams are ready for an assessment, help them to prepare for the day and help them to move on once the assessment is complete. They also have to share the good or bad news afterwards - a met or not met!
