About the session

In 2023, Defra and TPXimpact teamed up to explore how Defra governs its digital, data and technology projects.

We set out to understand why this area of governance is proving challenging, from the perspectives of the different people involved.

Our hypothesis: if you take a user-centred approach to governance, you’ll create better services for the public and better outcomes for the organisation and its people.

In this session, Lynne and Mica will take you on the story of how Defra is testing and making changes, to find its way to more user-centred governance.

Participant takeaways:

  • You should care about governance - and it's a lot more interesting than it sounds!
  • Governance grows and spreads when it's not designed intentionally
  • Principles of user-centred design offer a way to understand and create good governance
  • There are many ways to start the journey to more user-centred governance, and it's not always 'rip it up and start again'
