About the session

The Public Design Evidence Review (PDER), a milestone publication from Cabinet Office and Policy Profession published in July and after nearly two years in the making, sets out why public design matters and what good looks like. But what needs to happen now so that we move from the crucial evidence and ambitions it describes, to the impact we know design can achieve?

This closing 45-minute discussion will give everyone a chance to learn about the Review, consider how they might use it to influence their own design contexts and explore what conditions will enable public design’s role to grow and thrive. Together we will look at cultural and governance barriers we must overcome, organisational opportunities to be harnessed and key threats to be countered. The insight gained will help inform the next steps needed to strengthen the Review’s impact in the months and years ahead.

About the speaker(s)

Lucy Kimbell

Lucy Kimbell (PhD) is Professor of Contemporary Design Practices at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London where she convenes the Policy Futures Studio. Her research explores service design, social design and design for policy.

She is co-director of the international Sustainable Transitions through Democratic Design Doctoral Network funded by the EU Marie Curie programme and led the Design and Public Policy Research Network funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

An innovator in post-graduate education, she taught design on the MBA at Said Business School for 15 years, delivered executive education in design thinking and service design, and helped set up the MBA at Central Saint Martins.
